George Nickel, Staff Sergeant, US Army
Veterans Charity Ride Sidecar Pilot and Mentor
Originally from Youngstown Ohio, George began his military career in 1989. The service included active duty in the U.S. Army, the Idaho Air National Guard, and finally in the U.S. Army Reserves. Over the course of his assignments George has been a mortar crew member in the light infantry, a parachute rigger, an air transportation journeyman, and a combat engineer. His deployments have included duty in Saudi Arabia and Oman in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and in Iraq, clearing improvised explosive devices during Operation Iraqi Freedom. George also spent twelve years as a correctional sergeant with the Idaho Department of Correction. Due to wounds received in Iraq, George sought a new career in life and began studies at Boise State University in 2010. George received a bachelor’s degree in Psychology in December 2013, has started a Master’s degree program in Social Work at Northwest Nazarene University and is now the Director of Student and Veteran Affairs for the Wyakin Warrior Foundation.

George and the Wyakin Warrior Foundation.
RG 3I was inducted into the Wyakin Warrior Foundation in 2012 after learning about it from a fellow veteran that worked for the program. I was interested in what they offered, primarily the networking and professional development, as this was the first time I was pursuing a career path that did not include wearing a uniform. I was paired with a community mentor that is a retired business person and he has proven to be an amazing resource for discussing not only career topics, but life topics as well. The professional development provided me with the tools to confidently apply for employment in the private sector without fear that my resume would end up in the trash due to amateur mistakes. The networking tenet of the program also supported my goals of working with veterans in the community by allowing me to meet a wealth of people offering opportunities and resources. I have now used what I have learned to gain employment with the Wyakin Warrior Foundation and can now directly assist veterans in obtaining their goals.
